Global Health Residency

The finalizing component of the residency GH&TM is the Global Health Residency. During 6 months the resident works in a rural or urban training hospital in a low-resource setting in Africa or Asia.

The purpose of the Global Health Residency is to practice the acquired skills in a hospital abroad with its specific characteristics concerning health system, social determinants of health, local epidemiology and burden of disease which together define the local healthcare provision. The resident learns to function optimally in the setting of the training hospital.

During the Global Health Residency the resident works at the clinical departments of general surgery, gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatrics, general outpatient clinic and primary healthcare outreach. Also part of the programme is the realization of two public health assignments in collaboration with the local team. These assignments consist for example of an applied research, project implementation or training that meets the local needs and contributes to the improvement of healthcare at local level.

After 6 months of training abroad, the resident is competent in the execution of all clinical skills required for a physician GH&TM, independently or with only minor supervision within the context of the training hospital. The required levels of competence are defined by a set of “Entrustable Professional Activities” and the CanMEDS competencies, which are described in detail in the Specialty Training Curriculum. The assessment of the levels of competence is facilitated by a digital portfolio and is described in the Assessment Guide.  Through cyclical evaluations of the training hospitals, the quality of the Global Health Residency is assured. In these evaluations the residents, training hospital and training institute participate.
